چکیده

UNLABELLED Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common genetic disease in African-Americans, characterized by recurrent painful vaso-occlusive crises. Medical therapies for controlling or preventing crises are limited because of efficacy and/or toxicity. This is a randomized, controlled, single-crossover protocol of hypnosis for managing pain in SCD patients. Participants receive hypnosis from a trained hypnosis therapist followed by six weeks of self-hypnosis using digital media. Those in the control arm receive SCD education followed by a six-week waiting period before crossing over to the hypnosis arm of the study. Outcome measures include assessments of pain (frequency, intensity and quality), anxiety, coping strategies, sleep, depression, and health care utilization. To date, there are no published randomized, controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of hypnosis on SCD pain modulation in adults. Self-hypnosis for pain management may be helpful in modulating chronic pain, improving sleep quality, and decreasing use of narcotics in patients with SCD. TRIAL REGISTRATION ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT00393250.

Comparing the effect of self-care education and pain self-management on the nature of pain and quality of life in patients with sickle cell disease

Background & Aim: Self-care and self-management, as two effective strategies play an effective role in controlling pain and quality of life. Therefore, considering the characteristics and dimensions of these two concepts, this study aimed to compare the effect of self-care education and pain self-management on the nature of pain and quality of life in patients with sickle cell disease. Methods...

The effect of hypnosis on pain and peripheral blood flow in sickle-cell disease: a pilot study

BACKGROUND Vaso-occlusive pain crises (VOCs) are the "hallmark" of sickle-cell disease (SCD) and can lead to sympathetic nervous system dysfunction. Increased sympathetic nervous system activation during VOCs and/or pain can result in vasoconstriction, which may increase the risk for subsequent VOCs and pain. Hypnosis is a neuromodulatory intervention that may attenuate vascular and pain respon...

An infant Presenting with Cerebrovascular Accident was Diagnosed as a Sickle Cell Disease Patient: a Case Report

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a known inherited hemoglobin disorder featured by the presence of sickle shaped erythrocytes in the blood. It can cause cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in adults and children and is responsible for the majority of the strokes in children. Repeated blood transfusion are often required in an attempt to dilute blood thus reducing the risk of vaso-occlusion and stroke in...

Effect of Non- pharmacological Palliative Methods Training on Sickle Cell Anemia Outcomes

Background Drugs used by patients with sickle cell anemia to relieve pain have side effects, so the use of non-pharmacological palliative methods (such as massage, muscle relaxation, heat, drinking fluids, etc.) can be considered. We aimed to determine effect of non-pharmacological palliative methods training among adolescents with sickle cell anemia. <stro...

The Effect of L-Glutamine on Pain Crisis Reduction in Patients with Sickle Cell Anemia and Sickle β°-Thalassemia

Background: A low level of L-glutamine, a precursor of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in red blood cells (RBCs), is identified as an underlying mechanism for the potential decrement of the NAD redox and the incidence of pain crisis in sickle cell anemia (SCA). The aim of this study is to assess the impact of oral L-glutamine therapy on pain crisis reduction in patients with SCA and sic...
